The struggles and hopes of would-be parents are what makes the generosity and sacrifices of surrogates so invaluable. Take the first step to becoming a surrogate mother with Family Tree Surrogacy Center, and discover the unique and selfless joy of giving the gift of life.

Requirements to Be a Surrogate

You are a United States citizen or legal resident.

If you are not legally residing in the United States, then you cannot become a surrogate in our program.

You are between the ages of 21 – 38.

These are a woman’s natural prime childbearing years. Women in this age range have the best odds of delivering healthy, happy babies with little to no health issues. It is also the best time for the woman as well, as she is still young enough for the pregnancy not to be too burdensome, and better able to bounce back quickly from the stress her body will go through during pregnancy and childbirth.

You have one or more children of your own.

This shows that you have experience with pregnancy and childbirth and understand the sacrifices that must be made in order to deliver a healthy baby. Also, if you are a parent, you are less likely to be living a chaotic lifestyle and have a good understanding of the responsibilities that come with parenting.

You have not had more than three C-sections.

While having just one C-section is not a major problem, having multiple starts to add risk for both the mother and the baby. After each surgery, more scar tissue forms, which causes issues when the embryo tries to implant into the uterus. It can also lead to excessive bleeding and a number of serious birth defects.

You have a Body Mass Index of under 32.

Being overweight can lead to a number of serious health issues, so we make sure our surrogates are at a healthy BMI so that both the baby and the surrogate mother are not at risk of any weight-related problems.

    You are a non-smoker and non-drug user.

Smoking and using drugs are both extremely addictive and hard to kick, so to ensure the health of the baby we require that none of our surrogate mothers do either. They damage the health of the mother, which in return affects the wellbeing of the baby.

You have good physical & mental health.

Pregnancy can be an extremely difficult time, so it is very important that you can hold up both physically and mentally against the stress. Our potential surrogates have to be in solid shape when it comes to both their bodies and their minds in order to ensure the health of the baby.

You agree to psychological, drug & criminal screening.

This is one of the more important requirements to be a surrogate mother because we need to know exactly who we are putting forward as a potential surrogate. Becoming a surrogate is one hundred percent contingent on you consenting to undergo and pass these screenings.

You have a supportive partner, friend, or family member.

While one of the more unexpected of our requirements for surrogate mothers, it is by no means less important than the others. Pregnancy is a long and at times stressful process, and going at it alone can sometimes feel like too much to bear. This is also why we make sure you have access to our support group to help you overcome those trying times.

You have not had more than 5 births.

Risk factors increase when women have had too many pregnancies. Some known complications can be obstructed birth, preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) or excessive bleeding.

    What Surrogates Say About Us

    How to Become a Surrogate

    Start your online Application

The very first step in the surrogate pregnancy process is actually applying to be a surrogate mother. The application process starts with a qualification questionnaire to ensure that you meet all the requirements to become a surrogate. Some of these questions include topics like your citizenship status, lifestyle, past pregnancy experience, medical issues, and employment history. Once you meet all requirements we ask you about your background, health, and motivations for becoming a surrogate.

    Interview

After completing your online application, you will have a one-to-one call with our Admissions Manager. This is to help us get a better, more personal understanding of who you are and why you want to go through the surrogate mother process. We will go through your application and discuss your journey in more detail. You will also have an opportunity to ask us any questions, so you can have a clear idea of what is expected of you.

    Screening

The screening process entails a background check and a review of your medical records. Getting all this information might take a while, so you may want to consider contacting your doctor and OB/GYN beforehand to request medical records.

    Matching

After you make it through the application, interview, and screening process, we get started on finding your perfect match. We will share your profile with intended parents who we believe will be a good match for you, based on shared values and geographical location. If you’re a good fit for each other we will facilitate an introduction, allowing you and the prospective parents an opportunity to get to know each other.

    Psychological & Medical Screening

If the match is successful you will be asked to complete a psychological evaluation and medical screening by a licensed mental health professional experienced in fertility counseling. You’ll be evaluated to determine your medication protocol to best prepare your uterus for implantation. This may include a physical, pap smear, vaginal ultrasound, hysteroscopy, as well as other tests.

    Legal Contract

Once you have been psychologically and medically cleared the legal surrogacy contract will begin. We will appoint legal counsel for you. From here, you and your representation will work with the prospective parents and their lawyer to officially outline the terms of the surrogate pregnancy process.

    Cycle Preparation

Once the legal issues are out of the way, it is time to start preparing for your cycle. You may be given birth control pills to regulate your cycle and then you will receive your cycle schedule from the fertility clinic, which has information on when you need to take your medication, how much and upcoming doctor appointments. You will also be informed of any lifestyle changes or limitations you will have to make in order to ensure a successful surrogate pregnancy.

    Medication

Medications will prepare your uterus for the embryo transfer. Some possible medications you might take include estrogen and progesterone via pill, patch, or injection. You will also have your blood drawn and receive ultrasound checks to make sure the cycle is progressing properly.

    Embryo Transfer

The embryos are transferred into your uterus and you will remain on bed rest for approximately 24 to 72 hours and continue medication until you are advised to stop. A catheter is placed in your vagina leading all the way to the uterus. The embryos will be fed through the catheter and into the uterus, hopefully implanting properly and leading to pregnancy.

    Pregnancy

After the transfer there is a 2 week wait to confirm a pregnancy by blood work and 4 weeks until a heartbeat confirmation by ultrasound. You will continue getting your blood drawn and ultrasounds, which will happen more often than a standard pregnancy. Throughout your pregnancy we offer monthly support groups, pampering & gifts, and personal case management. These are just ways of helping you get through the process so that you can have the happiest and healthiest pregnancy possible.
