San Diego is among the best cities in the United States for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to live, work and start a family. The Municipal Equality Index by the Human Rights Campaign assesses LGBT equality in 506 cities, and San Diego received a perfect score of 100. The index rates cities based on non-discrimination policies, inclusiveness of city services and outreach efforts.

Gallup polls show that about 4 percent of San Diego’s population identifies as LGBT and this number is increasing every year. San Diego is also increasingly becoming a destination for the international LGBT community to have children. Many gay couples are pursuing surrogacy in San Diego to start a family
.
“We enjoyed being part of a community sharing a similar goal of wanting to become a parent through surrogacy. Finding a fertility clinic with great success rates and getting full support with the legal process, made San Diego the best place for us to have a baby,” share Mike and Samuel, whose son Joshua was born last year with the help of a surrogate.

San Diego-based surrogacy agency Family Tree Surrogacy Center is also seeing a huge increase in inquiries from intended parents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The number of babies born each year through the agency has tripled over the past few years. Already this year, 24 babies have been born for gay parents through the agency, which was founded in 2014.

“The reason we see people from all over the world is the city’s openness to LGBT communities and we are proud of the fact that San Diego has a strong presence of world-class fertility specialists supporting anyone looking to pursue the goal of starting a family. We have favorable California laws that make legal parentage for non-heterosexual couples easy. Anybody dreaming of parenthood can come to San Diego and be matched with a surrogate and have their names listed as parents on the birth certificate. California is a very surrogacy friendly state for same-sex parents,” says Melinda Guy of Family Tree Surrogacy Center who is also an experienced surrogate, delivering twins for a local family in 2001.

California allows intended parents to establish legal parentage before the child is born, also known as a ‘pre-birth order’.

“We can’t wait to start our second surrogacy journey and give Joshua a sibling,” says Mike.
